World Maritime Day 2019

world-maritime-day

Today, Thursday September 26, we celebrate World Maritime Day, held the fourth Thursday of September every year. Do you want to know what is the origin of this date, what is the theme of World Maritime Day 2019 and many other details? We’ll tell you about it below.

Currently, maritime transport moves 90% of international trade, and is therefore of vital importance for the development of the global economy. But not only now; shipping has always played a key role in history, making new discoveries possible and allowing any product to be enjoyed anywhere in the world.

From the 19th century to the present day

With the aim of improving safety at sea, in the second half of the nineteenth century a series of international standards that would later be adopted by different countries started to arise.

With the arrival of the UN, a request that many countries had been promoting for years finally came true: the creation of an international body to ensure the safety of maritime transport. Thus, in 1948, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was officially created, initially created under the name of Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO), a name it maintained until 1982. Since then, the rules established by the IMO have served as a base to regulate the activity of the sector and have made maritime transport safer and wealthier.

On the other hand, in 1980, World Maritime Day was celebrated for the first time, becoming one of the most important events for the shipping industry and the maritime sector, and it has been celebrated every year since then on the fourth Thursday of September.

World Maritime Day 2019: Promoting Gender Equality

Each year IMO chooses a theme for World Maritime Day, and the theme for World Maritime Day 2019 is “Empowering women in the maritime community”. With this initiative the IMO seeks to promote gender equality in the sector and support women in the maritime community to achieve greater representation in the industry, as stated in Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality.

Happy World Maritime Day!
